WHAT IS MITOTE?Mitote is a community cultural development practice which uses the arts as a powerful means to form community, bringing people into relationship around themes of World Peace and Sustainability. Mitote is a Mexican nahuatl circular dance to celebrate fertility and is also the cloud and snake symbol which represents the union between heaven and earth. Daniel Sanchez is a Mexican artist who specializes in developing and facilitating percussion orchestras, creating musical instruments made with solid disposable materials and using Afro-American, middle-west and African rhythms. In his work, Daniel promotes ecological sensibility, social integrity, and cultural pluralism - all within an atmosphere of collaboration. Supported by music, participants develop both a community and rhythmic sense, while recycling materials into musical instruments develops creativity and underscores ecological consciousness. Daniel is in residence at the Roundhouse to share his teaching and skills with members of our community.
HOW TO PARTICIPATE.
Participation is free, but we do require pre-registration. A commitment to attend all the sessions is expected. All are invited to perform at the Earth Village and at National Aboriginal Day on June 21. Classes meet each weekday evening June 12-23.ALSO FOR PROFESSIONAL DANCERS, PERFORMERS, TEACHERS ...
Professional performers and teachers are offered a special opportunity to learn Mitote from Daniel and to incorporate this communal dance form into their own teaching methodology and styles. For those who are interested Daniel will meet with you an hour before and an hour after each weekday session. Those being mentored in these sessions will be asked to stay for the public sessions and to receive hands-on experience through this project. In partnership with Judith Marcuse Projects we hope to engage our local community with this artist and provide an opportunity for participants to perform at the Earth Village Festival and at National Aboriginal Day celebrations at the Roundhouse on June 21.
