FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - SUSTENANCE FESTIVAL
Feast on Arts and Culture at the SUSTENANCE Festival

Vancouver, BC – The Roundhouse, Get Local (a partnered project of FarmFolk/CityFolk and the Vancouver Farmers Market) and the BC Farmers’ Market Nutrition and Coupon Project are proud to present “SUSTENANCE: Feasting on Art & Culture.” A first time, unique celebration, SUSTENANCE Festival starts on Thursday, October 1 and culminates on World Food Day: October 16th. SUSTENANCE endeavours to connect the communities of art, culture, and food security. From global to local, from historic to present day, the art and culture of food will be something everyone can feast on.

SUSTENANCE Festival kicks off with the opening celebration on Saturday, October 3, a party for all of the exhibitors and producers who are participating in SUSTENANCE Festival, special guests and the public. Guests can enjoy local food and Lotusland Wines while perusing the exhibits, including internationally acclaimed El Maiz Es Nuestra Vida (“The Corn is Our Life”), a contemporary art exhibition from Oaxaca, Mexico that guides the public through the history of corn throughout the Americas, and CORNUCOPIA, an interactive installation designed to bring an understanding to the average citizen of the great environmental stress and energy consequence of industrializing our food. The night will feature live music, presentations, and a chance to be amongst the first to explore the many exhibits of SUSTENANCE Festival. For a full list of SUSTENANCE Festival exhibits and events please scroll down .

SUSTENANCE Festival will offer a bounty of fun, learning, and agri-tainment, with over 20 food related art exhibits, 15 interactive pieces on display, and loads of events over two weeks. The CITYFOOD Kitchen will feature local food cooking classes by Chef Darren Clay, and workshops to teach people how to preserve food to eat locally through the winter. Family Day on Saturday, October 10 will entertain kids with piñata making and breaking, a pumpkin pie eating contest, and a workshop by Growing Chefs, a non-profit society that works to inspire a love of growing and eating sustainable food in young people.

SUSTENANCE Festival will also feature a special screening of the award-winning foodie film, Tableland, by local filmmaker Craig Noble. A culinary expedition in search of the people, place and taste of North American small-scale, sustainable food production, Tableland celebrates the positive working models of growing and consuming local food.

Thursday, October 8 will have people saying “OHHHHH FOOD!” A naughty night of food with forbidden fruit wine, saucy storytelling, erotic culinary poetry reading, and special sexy production: those dirty fruits and vegetables brought to you by Biovia Organic Link Ltd., will make for an exciting event for Adults Only.

The final day of festivities will celebrate World Food Day on Friday, October 16 with a Pocket Market from 11:00 am-5:00 pm set up on site at The Roundhouse. All produce will come from Southlands Farm, a 2.6 acre family farm located in Vancouver’s Southlands neighbourhood. The evening will bring the Closing Celebration starting at 6 pm, with real beer, food, a performance by The Pressure Cooker Theatre, and music by The Carnival Band.

SUSTENANCE Festival will be held at the Roundhouse Community Arts & Recreation Centre in Yaletown, and at several satellite locations. For full details on all of the exhibits and events, and workshop registration please scroll down.

MUSIC WITH RICHARD GRAINGER
One of the most prolific and diverse artists on the Folk Scene today, working tirelessly to promote the music and folk arts in general to an ever widening audience. Born in Middlesbrough England, an industrial town on the North East coast of England, he was brought up in a musical family, and sang with them from a very young age. Richard has written a special song, “Town Meal,” that he will share with us tonight while he entertains us.

BISHOP'S RESTAURANT
Tucked away on West 4th in Kitsilano is a legendary restaurant with a big reputation. For more than 20 years John Bishop has led the field in serving food that is organic, produced locally and sustainably. Many consider his eponymous Bishop's to be Canada's version of Chez Panisse. With a reputation like that, lots of people don't realize that Bishop's is also a cozy neighbourhood haven serving quality dishes at affordable prices. John and Chef Carlson work directly with fishers, producers and growers to source the pick-of-the-crop and menus change constantly to reflect this. Bishop's is a proud foundation member of OceanWise and the Green Table Network

GLORIOUS ORGANICS’ “GARULOUS GREENS”
For anyone who has read Timothy Taylor’s “Stanley Park”, they will recall the Monkey’s Paw chef not being able to participate in the Seasons of Local Splendor at the Garulous Greens farm … of course, this was FarmFolk/CityFolk’s Feast of Fields fundraising event at Fraser Common Farm, home to Glorious Organics (formerly called Glorious Garnish & Seasonal Salad.) Co-owner & organic farmer, Heather Pritchard, also Executive Director of FarmFolk/CityFolk, will be serving her “Garulous Greens” tonight.

LOTUSLAND VINEYARDS
Girlsrmeaner and the Zweigelt Cabernet, $5 glass
Lotusland wines are a true celebration of British Columbia inside and out. All of our wines are made with organically grown Fraser Valley fruit. On the outside of our wine bottles, we celebrate the people, places, and things of Lotusland.

Roundhouse Community Arts & Recreation Centre
181 Roundhouse Mews (Davie & Pacific)

CORNUCOPIA – Roundhouse Artist in Residence – an interactive installation sharing new paradigms and the abundance of information regarding the consequences of industrializing our food system. (Population of Noise, Now BC, Village Vancouver and electronic/kinetic artist Rob Symmers)

KHAPAGA (HEAVENLY STREAM) – Glass and Porcelain Paint, Year: 2008
To achieve depth and durability on the canvas, Michele uses a technique of layering a variety of media including: modeling agents, gold and silver dust, sand, glass and porcelain paint. The results are often large, dramatic pieces that work well in both commercial spaces and private residences. Michele's earlier works were titled in Greek to represent the heritage that she married into. Meanwhile, her more recent pieces feature titles in Sanskrit, a language rich with Buddhist underpinnings and better reflecting her belief system. Currently, her work can be found in various locations throughout Vancouver: C Restaurant, nu restaurant + lounge, Raincity Grill, Solarice Salon & Spa, The Loden Hotel and Becker Galleries. EL MAIZ ES NUESTRA VIDA – “The Corn is Our Life” This exhibition is a contemporary art exhibition whose theme is based on the native maize seeds of Mexico. This exhibition uses maize as a symbol to guide the public through its history throughout the Americas, showing how it has become a main source of food for numerous cultures and then questions why this native seed is in danger of extinction. The artists in this exhibit explore the concepts of cultural memory, biodiversity, genetic modification, and how the history of maize has developed in the last 20 years as an important resource in the global economy. This catalytic exhibition hopes to dialogue with the public to inspire its viewers to health problems due to the industrial food we eat, the loss of biodiversity and the disappearance of cultural memory. take part in social change through a simply act of not purchasing food products that are harmful to the well being of our planet, our health and to our neighboring countries. The more we as a community understand what is happening globally with our food and the complex intertwining of political policies between each other’s countries, the more we will build bonds to help solve the problematic issues which are causing migration, an increase in health problems due to the industrial food we eat, the loss of biodiversity and the disappearance of cultural memory.

CATCH OF THE DAY – Mixed Media, 2009. From ‘Liquidation’, an ongoing project from artist Cam MacDonald. Imagine a not so distant future when all commercial fisheries have collapsed. EMPTY/FULL – Mixed Media and oil on panel, 2009. How does our food system look today? Who does it serve? And what will it look like tomorrow? Artist Cam MacDonald has painted a shopping cart, at once a symbol of both abundance and poverty, surrounded by a border of kale—an incredibly nutritious vegetable that grows almost wild, year round, in our mild climate. (Cameron MacDonald)

THE ART OF BOTANY – Ink & colored pencil, 2008. A collection of botany drawings (Margit Boronkay)

LORI MAIRS/PUBLIC BONE – Sculpture/Jewellery. Lori is a sculptor in steel and bone and naturally migrates between this large scale work and jewellery design. She currently acts as caretaker on a 22 acre Nature Conservancy in the central Okanagan region of British Columbia. Lori has been gifted on many occasions with beautiful specimens from the forest floor, the remains of the hunt, or a bear, cougar or coyote kill. Her sculpture in both steel and bone not only conjures familiarity with the skeletal but has poignant references to the presence of the absent. Lori’s jewellery is made from shed antler. The antler is shed annually in late winter then completely regrows again between March and August with a beautiful soft velvet layer coating it. In the fall, the velvet is rubbed off on trees and the hard shell coat is exposed and ready for mating season. In late winter the antler is shed onto the forest floor and the cycle begins again.

TARYNN PARKER ART - 2008 – Photography, acrylic, graphite, oil.
Tarynn sees design, when practiced integrally as a profound tool for elevating ideas, and making them accessible to our culture and to community. Her artistic projects often bridge between art and design. The way food can unite us intensely in a moment has been a great focus for Tarynn, as she looks in to the meditative and joyful experience of finding, preparing, longing for, and enjoying food. The depth of understanding her role as a designer and as an artist through these apparently indirect means is the very key to understanding from what perspective she creates. In her design and artwork, Tarynn is constantly working back from complexity to simplicity, to find essence, and true moment to moment experience. Tarynn was born and raised in the Okanagan and Vancouver. She is currently living in the Okanagan, where she creates her artwork and runs her design business, Tarynn Liv Parker Design.

JACKIE CONNELLY PHOTOGRAPHY – Jackie Connelly specializes in photographing food and beverage, still life and food lifestyle for advertising, commercial, editorial and food industry clients. Jackie shoots both in Vancouver and on Vancouver Island and is lover of all things food, sustainable and community. Jackie also has a delicious blog.

100 MILE DIET FOODSHED MAP – The Vancouver 100-Mile Diet Foodshed Map takes the tradition of bioregional mapping to a new edge. It is a wild, hand-built looking poster crowded with painted images and narrative blurbs that evoke the area’s food culture. Centrepiece to the poster is a map that illustrates the geographic extent of Vancouver’s 100-Mile Diet.

PYSANKY – Eggs 1999-2009 – A pysanky or pysanka is a Ukrainian Easter egg, decorated using a wax-resist (batik) method. The word comes from the verb pysaty, "to write", as the designs are not painted on, but written with beeswax. (Damery/Galanta Family)

JENN PENTLAND PHOTOGRAPHY – (Slideshow) – Jenn is a Vancouver based photographer who loves to shoot nature, landscapes, and FOOD! She is also known to photograph the odd wedding. Jenn is currently working on the Eat Your History project with FarmFolk/CityFolk and the 100 Mile Diet Society.

NOURISHING STORIES (Video) – Digital stories of the power of community & food as told by participants of the Farmers' Market Nutrition & Coupon Project (an initiative of the BC Association of Farmers' Markets). The Farmers' Market Nutrition & Coupon Project is a unique initiative, the first of its kind in Canada, providing coupons to low-income families to purchase fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, eggs, dairy or fresh cut herbs at local farmers’ markets. Participating families are low-income with children and low-income pregnant women, actively participating in a cooking & skill building program. Families develop & build knowledge and skill in the preparation of healthy, nutritious meals using fresh food. They also experience the power of community that food can create. These are their stories. (Paula Luther, BC Farmers’ Market Nutrition & Coupon Project)

EDIBLE VANCOUVER MAGAZINE (DISPLAY) – Edible Vancouver is a bi-monthly print magazine celebrating the food-and drink-of Metro Vancouver, the Fraser Valley and the Okanagan Valley. Although it's a free magazine, Publisher Philip Solman and Editor Debbra Mikaelsen were determined to create a 'coffee table' publication of beauty, with stunning photography, captivating stories, and tempting recipes. Readers have been quick to call it a work of art, and they eagerly seek, collect and cherish it. As such, copies tend to get snapped up rather quickly, which has prompted a growing number of people to subscribe and ensure that they never miss an issue.

FOOD SECURITY IN RECREATIONAL SETTINGS - A MODEL FOR CHANGE
WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 7TH AT 4:00PM

Strathcona Community Centre is using an innovative approach to address food security by integrating food programs right into its many recreation programs for children and families. This community is located in the Downtown Eastside area of Vancouver where the average household income is approximately $15500.00 per year. This is a neighbourhood of increased food insecurity and these integrated programs are reaching hundreds of at risk children and families everyday (a very inclusive model). The Centre has implemented food programs capitalizing on the strengths of community residents, youth and families who run the programs. Issues addressed include decreasing transient hunger, improving nutritional health, improving behaviour, providing needed energy to participate in programs, learning food skills (cook training for youth), engaging children in purposeful activities (a crime prevention strategy) and learning about healthy choices. There are many partners collaborating to support these 15 food programs including Strathcona Community Centre Association, Parks and Recreation, Vancouver Board of Education, City of Vancouver Active Communities, Vancouver Coastal Health, University of British Columbia nutrition students, and many corporate donors (who provide finances to renovate kitchens, purchase food and hire staff). This is “providing healthy food options in public buildings”(Health Inequities in BC Discussion Paper p 69.) targeting the most vulnerable in Vancouver. Currently the Community Centre Association is developing a resolution to the Vancouver Park Board and City of Vancouver for the integration of food security into all programming targeting our most vulnerable children and families. (Ron Suzuki, Strathcona Community Centre)

YOUR DAILY BREAD: CONVENTIONAL AND ALTERNATIVE GRAIN CHAINS IN CANADA AND BRITISH COLUMBIA - WITH TERRA BREADS
TUESDAY, OCTOBER 13TH AT 3:00PM

This event is free. To attend, you will need to register with FarmFolk/CityFolk. Please email your name, Workshop you would like to attend, and your phone number to info@ffcf.bc.ca.

This presentation explores the current state of grain production and trading on global, national, provincial and local scales. Examining some historical evidence of grain production in SW BC specifically and exploring the current and potential role of newly emerging "alternative grain chains" in the southern part of our province, this talk highlights the importance of continuing to develop strong, local grain chains to preserve traceability and accountability in our food stream, support a local farming and processing economy, reduce food miles, build relationships between landscapes, farmers, millers, bakers and eaters and challenge and expand our traditional notions of how grain can be produced, processed and consumed. With pedal powered milling demonstrations and tastings of local grown goodies prepared by Terra Breads.(Christopher Hergesheimer, FarmFolk/CityFolk Society & The Flour Peddler)

IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT FOOD, IT’S ABOUT JUST FOOD. LIVING A CULTURE OF FOOD JUSTICE.
TUESDAY, OCTOBER 13TH AT 5:00PM

This event is free. To attend, you will need to register with FarmFolk/CityFolk. Please email your name, Workshop you would like to attend, and your phone number to info@ffcf.bc.ca.

This will be a workshop for individuals interested in social justice aspects of food. Much media attention to the local food movement has focused on food as a luxury item. But growing a local food system means more that fine dining; it must encompass access to food for people across socio-economic classes as well as fair wages for those growing the food. This workshop will provide a space for discussing how to keep social justice as a central part of the local food movement and an opportunity to network with others interested in addressing this issue. (Chris Bodnar, Glen Valley Organic Farm)

FOOD SKILLS FOR FAMILIES
OCTOBER 5, 7, & 14
9:00 AM - 12:30 PM
7646 Prince Albert Street
phone 604-718-6521

Moberly Arts & Culture Centre will partner again this fall with the Canadian Diabetes Association and BC Healthy Living Alliance by hosting a Food Skills for Families program. This program aims to build the necessary skills for choosing and preparing healthy foods for families while recognizing that cooking healthy food that is tasty and appealing to our families is not always easy. Adding to the challenge is the fact that some families have limited incomes or do not even have basic information about where to start. At Moberly, the Food Skills for Families community facilitator is Mohinder Sidhu who is trained to lead small groups of community members in choosing, cooking and eating healthier foods. Each week this group comes together to receive new information and to collectively prepare and share a sumptuous, nutritious, feast.
Food Skills for Families is a Canadian Diabetes research project, where respondents report as a result of taking the program that they are being more mindful of their eating, are preparing the new recipes at home for their families and would highly recommend the program to others. Other findings have reported that participants have gained significant higher levels of knowledge about healthier choices (such as what foods are healthy to eat, what beverages are healthy to drink, where to buy healthy foods), and improved skills to cook and prepare nutritious and appetizing meals, keep food safe, plan meals, shop and modify recipes to make healthier choices
