MUSICAL GUESTS: Jill Barber, Cara Luft, Christina Martin HOST: Shari Ulrich

ABOUT THE PERFORMERS

Jill Barber is a three-time Juno Award nominated singer-songwriter with an unforgettable voice once heard, never forgotten. Her critically acclaimed repertoire spans a transformative spectrum from folk, to vocal jazz, to pop, and includes songs in both French and English.  Following up her 2018 album Metaphora, which featured the #1 hit song ‘Girl’s Gotta Do,” her breakthrough jazz album Chances was certified Gold for 40,000 copies sold in Canada. Jill’s work has earned her awards, such as the Sirius XM Jazz Artist of the Year and the East Coast Music Award for Album of the Year, and scores of fans, including Blue Rodeo, Ron Sexsmith, and Kris Kristofferson, who called Jill “a real songwriter, and a damn good songwriter.”  Her evocative and timeless songs have been featured in film and TV, scoring shows such as Orange Is The New Black, The L Word, and Heartland, as well as powering a global advertising campaign for Chrysler with the track ‘Never Quit Loving You.’ jillbarber.com

Christina Martin is a powerhouse musician, songsmith, and performer hailing from the windswept East Coast of Canada. Her music dances effortlessly through Pop, Rock, Folk and Americana traditions but stays deftly unchained by any one label, refusing to be pigeon-holed and unafraid to dip into stranger waters. From her Austin-inflected 2002 debut Pretty Things, through more rousing rocky climbs such as 2015’s It’ll Be Alright, to the sweeping cinematic dreamscape of 2018’s Impossible to Hold, Martin is an artist who is constantly shifting, and constantly evolving. Through it all runs a backbone of raw honesty about the human condition. Be they personal confessions or narrative tales, each song is lovingly crafted, and hits in the heart like a well-thrown punch. With seven studio albums, two live albums, a string of high-profile performances as long as an elephant’s memory and a reputation for transformative live shows, Christina Martin is a woman on fire. christinamartin.net

Cara Luft | Juno Award-winning singer-songwriter-musician Cara Luft is that rare artist steeped in folk and traditional roots music almost from birth, yet willing to alter the fabric, stretch the boundaries and fearlessly bend genres and styles.  A founding member of Canadian folk super-group The Wailin’ Jennys and the brainchild behind Winnipeg’s powerhouse duo The Small Glories, Luft deserves her solid reputation as one of Canada’s finest live performers, armed with amazing tenacity, vision, energy and a contagious hilarity. To quote the roots magazine No Depression, “Luft has a rich tradition in folk music – it’s safe to assume that she knows her stuff – and upon listening it becomes quite clear that she is indeed a formidable songwriter and performer… Ms. Luft sets the bar for the talented few who’ll follow in her footsteps.”  caraluft.com

Shari Ulrich (Host / Producer) began writing songs at the end of the reign of The Hometown Band in 1977. Her first song “Feel Good” was a hit for the band. Her solo career followed from 1978 with radio hits with “She Remembers”, “Bad Bad Girl”, “Romeo”, “Every Road” and others. Since then, she has released nine albums of original material, along with another 16 in collaborations with Pied Pumkin, UHF (Bill Henderson & Roy Forbes), and BTU (Barney Bentall & Tom Taylor). Her work has garnered two Juno Awards and several nominations, an induction into the BC Entertainment Hall of Fame, and a 2014 Canadian Folk Music Award (CFMA) for English Songwriter of the Year. She has been producing and hosting Bluebird North / SongBird North both nationally and locally since 1996 and at the Roundhouse since 2005. shariulrich.com
