Summer jobs for Rec & Read program

The Rec and Read Program is a partnership with the Vancouver School Board. This referral-based service is geared to children in grade 1 (ages 6-7 years) who have been identified at needing reading and comprehension support. The AM program is Educational and the PM program is Recreational. See below.

Applications are being accepted for Rec & Read Program – Senior Leader (application due Monday, May 23) and Project Manager (application due Tuesday, May 24).

Rec & Read Program – Senior Leader

Days: Monday to Friday from 12:15-3:00pm
Rate of Pay: $16.88 + 12% in lieu of vacation and stat holidays
Start date: July 4 – 22, 2022 + 1 training date

The 3-week program is delivered at a satellite location – Lord Roberts Elementary School (1100 Bidwell Street, Vancouver)
09:00-12:00pm Reading curriculum (VSB)
12:00-12:30pm Lunch
12:30-02:30pm Recreation

The Roundhouse Community Arts & Recreation Centre is seeking an organized individual with strong leadership skills and experience working with children’s recreational camp programs to oversee the afternoon recreational component of the Rec & Read program. The Senior Leader will be enthusiastic, driven, responsible, and prepared to provide program planning, supervision, and direct leadership to the Rec & Read program.

Qualifications:
• Experience working with school-aged children (6-12 years)
• Strong organizational, leadership and team-building skills 
• Demonstrated ability to problem solve and multitask 
• Strong communication skills 
• HIVE FIVE certification an asset  
• The successful candidate will be required to complete and pass a criminal record check

Job Specifications:
In consultation with the Program Manager/Community Youth Worker(s):
• Work closely with the Program Leader and other staff to plan program
• Prepare program supplies and materials.  
• Supervise and carry out the age-appropriate recreational activities  
• Ensure programming is operating at a high-quality standard (i.e., safe, engaging and inclusive). 

Necessary Conditions for Consideration:
• Be 16 years of age or older at the start of the employment;
• Be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
• Successful completion of a Police Record Check vulnerable sectors search prior to the program start date is also necessary

Rec & Read Program – Project Manager

The Roundhouse Community Arts & Recreation Centre is seeking a highly organized individual with strong leadership skills and experience working with children’s recreational camp programs to oversee the recreational component of the Rec & Read program. The Project Manager will be enthusiastic, driven, responsible, and prepared to provide program planning, supervision, and direct leadership to the Rec & Read program. This is a summer position that involves on-site recreational activities, in addition to going on and participating in walking out-trips.

Qualifications:
• Previous experience working with children ages 6-12 years old
• Previous experience working in a day camp setting as a Program Manager or Leader
• At least one year of practical experience working with children and planning programs
• Strong leadership, communication, organizational, administrative, supervisory, interpersonal, and planning skills
• Demonstrates ability to work independently and in a team environment, takes initiative and is resourceful
• Demonstrates ability to manage emergencies, unusual incidents and behavioural challenges
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite: Outlook, Word, Publisher, and Excel
• Post-secondary education in a related field is desirable
• Valid First Aid & CPR/AED Level C Certification
• Fluency in a second language is an asset

Job Specifications:
In consultation with the Community Youth Worker(s):
• Administer age-appropriate programming, conduct registration follow-up, purchase/identify supply and equipment needs, and monitor staff hours
• Direct leadership and supervise program leaders
• Liaise and communicate with parents and/or guardians who have questions/concerns regarding the Camp and work with the Community Youth Worker/Community School Team staff to resolve any issues
• Actively ensure safety of children and staff through following safety guidelines from WCB, Vancouver Park Board and Public Health Authorities, communicating risk management procedures
• Prepare program and staff evaluations, complete final program report, and complete other tasks as required
