Behind the Scenes: Roundhouse Youth Council

Welcome to the Roundhouse Youth Council!

We’re excited to introduce you to the Roundhouse’s new Youth Council! This team of very cool and very engaged youth grades 8-11 are collaborating with our Community Youth Worker, Sally Chan, on projects and events at the Centre. Learn more about why these youth decided to join, along with fun facts about each Council member.

Q: What sparked your interest in joining the Roundhouse Youth Council?

A: I heard about the program and found it really cool! Helping out the Roundhouse and giving back to the community would be a very neat opportunity since this community has done so much for me over the past couple of years! This program makes feel like I have a voice. – Golnar, grade 9

A: Meeting new people and making new friends. – Warren, grade 8

A: I joined because I wanted to be a part in helping to better my community and gain leadership skills while working with motivated, like-minded peers. I have already done so much with my friends and look forward to doing so much more for my wonderful community. – Edward, grade 11

A: The need to learn what youth in Canada are like (as I’m from another country) and to practice my English. – Maximo, grade 10

A: To help younger kids and other people at the Roundhouse, for example, if they need help or to be shown around. And it is also a great way to meet new people. – Youssif, grade 8

A: My friend (Golnar) had already joined and said she enjoyed working with a great/welcoming group of people and asked if I would join. I agreed and liked it as well, and like the food they had as well as the interesting activities. I overall love getting updated with current events occurring in my community and working with my friends. – Sonja, grade 9

A: I’ve always wanted to try and make an impact in my community but was unsure how to and then I stumbled upon the Youth Council. – Leo, grade 11

A: Friends from my school invited me to join and I said sure since I was already going to youth group on Fridays. – Mateo, grade 9

A: Getting to know your community and volunteering. – Joshua, grade 9


Q: If you were a celebrity, what would you be famous for?

A: I would want to be famous for being a writer or volleyball player. – Golnar, grade 9

A: If I was a celebrity, I would be famous for being the jazz geek. I love jazz and listen to it everyday, sometimes a bit too much : ) – Edward, grade 11

A: I would be famous for YouTube since I like games. – Youssif, grade 8

A: If I was a celebrity, I think I would be famous for being a rapper. – Leo, grade 11

A: If I were a celebrity, I would be famous for music. – Mateo, grade 11


Q: What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever eaten?

A: I’ve eaten a rotten egg flavoured jelly bean. I almost puked. – Joshua, grade 9


Q: If you were an animal, what would you be?

A: I’d be an owl because they can fly (which is amazing) and also because they represent wisdom as they are one of the smartest birds. – Maximo, grade 10


Q: If you were mayor of Vancouver for a day, what laws would you make?

A: If I were they mayor I would make transit free for kids. – Warren, grade 8


Q: What’s your go-to karaoke song? (And where’s your favourite place to belt it out?)

A: “Valerie” by Amy Winehouse, in my room/bathroom. – Sonja, grade 9
