The Roundhouse is excited to host an artist residency featuring S7atsáliya (Charlene George), a member of the sḵwx̱ wú7mesh and səlilwətaɬ nations. This unique residency aims to elevate and revitalize the sḵwx̱ wú7mesh sníchim (Squamish Language). This important space will serve as a platform for a broader narrative that emphasizes our connection to the land, seasons, and weather through the lens of the Squamish language.
As part of her residency, s7atsáliya will engage in a project titled “Weaving The Seasons.” This initiative invites the community to experience the beauty and richness of the Squamish language. The residency will take place on Fridays throughout September (September 5, 12, 19, and 26) from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM in the Roundhouse Lobby. It’s a wonderful opportunity for everyone to drop by, talk with s7atsáliya, and learn about her weaving practice, which mirrors the changing seasons.
S7atsáliya’s artistic exploration will be joined by guest weavers, her husband, Alvin Martin Jr., and her sister-in-law, Bree Baker. Together, they will create pieces that not only celebrate the seasons but also embody the traditions, stories, and voices of their ancestors. Visitors can witness their progress in real-time, with works displayed in the WINDOW Gallery throughout the month of September.
